Graduate students won the world championship in the 2019 innovation FPGA Global Innovation Competition

After winning the first prize of Greater China region and the third prize of the world in the innovation FPGA global innovation competition last year, the participating teams of our university have made great achievements this year. On December 11, the global finals of 2019 Innovate FPGA competition came to an end in Tianjin, China. Liu Yongbing, Wang Yihong and Wu Jiayi, a student team guided by Mr. He Wei and Mr. Lin Yingcheng of our college, won the global finals champion of this competition after the preliminary, semi-final and final selection. (There were 1 gold award, 1 silver award, 1 bronze award and 3 iron awards in this competition.)

The Innovative FPGA global innovation design competition is a global top-level competition in the field of FPGA application research jointly held by Intel, Analog Devices, ISSI, DigiKey and Taiwan Youjing Technology company. It has been held for 15 consecutive years. The global finals of this year's competition were jointly organized with the 19th International Conference on Field-Programmable Technology (FPT), which is recognized as the top international conference on programmable technology and reconfigurable devices and computer systems in the Asia Pacific region.

The competition was divided into four regions: Greater China, the Americas, central and Eastern Europe, and the Asia Pacific region. A total of 846 teams from four regions signed up for the competition, including 213 teams from Greater China. The competition selected 12 teams to enter the global finals through preliminaries and regional finals. College of microelectronics and communication engineering team’s entry was badminton intelligent ball picking robot. This work combined SOC, FPGA, image processing technology, data fusion technology and mechatronics technology to process the distance information of badminton captured by lidar and the gray information of badminton captured by camera. According to the results, the closed-loop control of each mechanical part was carried out to realize the function of badminton picking up without damage. The novel theme, ingenious design, complete functions and strong practicability of this work was highly praised by the judges. Finally, it stood out from all the entries and won the world champion of the 2019 innovation FPGA innovation competition.
